Pure Class: John McCain’s Concession Speech

“Thank you for coming here on this beautiful Arizona evening. My friends, we have come to the end of a long journey. The American people have spoken, and they have spoken clearly.”

“A little while ago, I had the honor of calling Senator Barack Obama to congratulate him. To congratulate him on being elected the next president of the country that we both love. In a contest as long and difficult as this campaign has been, his success alone commands my respect for his ability and perseverance. But that he managed to do so by inspiring the hopes of so many millions of Americans who had once wrongly believed that they had little at stake or little influence in the election of an American president is something I deeply admire and commend him for achieving. This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight.”

“I’ve always believed that America offers opportunities to all who have the industry and will to seize it. Senator Obama believes that, too. But we both recognize that, though we have come a long way from the old injustices that once stained our nation’s reputation and denied some Americans the full blessings of American citizenship, the memory of them still had the power to wound.”

“A century ago, President Theodore Roosevelt’s invitation of Booker T. Washington to dine at the White House was taken as an outrage in many quarters. America today is a world away from the cruel and frightful bigotry of that time. There is no better evidence of this than the election of an African-American to the presidency of the United States.”

“Let there be no reason now for any American to fail to cherish their citizenship in this, the greatest nation on Earth. Senator Obama has achieved a great thing for himself and for his country. I applaud him for it, and offer him my sincere sympathy that his beloved grandmother did not live to see this day. Though our faith assures us she is at rest in the presence of her creator and so very proud of the good man she helped raise.”

“Senator Obama and I have had and argued our differences, and he has prevailed. No doubt many of those differences remain. These are difficult times for our country. And I pledge to him tonight to do all in my power to help him lead us through the many challenges we face. I urge all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him, but offering our next president our good will and earnest effort to find ways to come together to find the necessary compromises to bridge our differences and help restore our prosperity, defend our security in a dangerous world, and leave our children and grandchildren a stronger, better country than we inherited.”

“Whatever our differences, we are fellow Americans. And please believe me when I say no association has ever meant more to me than that. It’s natural, tonight, to feel some disappointment. But tomorrow, we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again. We fought – we fought as hard as we could. And though we feel short, the failure is mine, not yours.”

“I am so deeply grateful to all of you for the great honor of your support and for all you have done for me. I wish the outcome had been different, my friends. The road was a difficult one from the outset, but your support and friendship never wavered. I cannot adequately express how deeply indebted I am to you.”

“I’m especially grateful to my wife, Cindy, my children, my dear mother and all my family, and to the many old and dear friends who have stood by my side through the many ups and downs of this long campaign. I have always been a fortunate man, and never more so for the love and encouragement you have given me. You know, campaigns are often harder on a candidate’s family than on the candidate, and that’s been true in this campaign. All I can offer in compensation is my love and gratitude and the promise of more peaceful years ahead.”

“I am also, of course, very thankful to Governor Sarah Palin, one of the best campaigners I have ever seen, and an impressive new voice in our party for reform and the principles that have always been our greatest strength… her husband Todd and their five beautiful children… for their tireless dedication to our cause, and the courage and grace they showed in the rough and tumble of a presidential campaign. We can all look forward with great interest to her future service to Alaska, the Republican Party and our country.”

“To all my campaign comrades, from Rick Davis and Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter, to every last volunteer who fought so hard and valiantly, month after month, in what at times seemed to be the most challenged campaign in modern times, thank you so much. A lost election will never mean more to me than the privilege of your faith and friendship.”

“I don’t know what more we could have done to try to win this election. I’ll leave that to others to determine. Every candidate makes mistakes, and I’m sure I made my share of them. But I won’t spend a moment of the future regretting what might have been.”

“This campaign was and will remain the great honor of my life, and my heart is filled with nothing but gratitude for the experience and to the American people for giving me a fair hearing before deciding that Senator Obama and my old friend Senator Joe Biden should have the honor of leading us for the next four years.”

“I would not be an American worthy of the name should I regret a fate that has allowed me the extraordinary privilege of serving this country for a half a century. Today, I was a candidate for the highest office in the country I love so much. And tonight, I remain her servant. That is blessing enough for anyone, and I thank the people of Arizona for it.”

“Tonight, more than any night, I hold in my heart nothing but love for this country and for all its citizens, whether they supported me or Senator Obama – I wish Godspeed to the man who was my former opponent and will be my president. And I call on all Americans, as I have often in this campaign, to not despair of our present difficulties, but to believe, always, in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here.”

“Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history. Thank you, and God bless you, and God bless America. Thank you all very much.”

A Message To “Disaffected Dems” And The Republican Party

Barack Obama is right.  Now is the time for change.

The American public rejected the hard right swing that was part and parcel with the Bush Administration and, blinded by rhetoric, swung far to the left…  but not the traditional Democratic left.  This is a new Democratic Party.

In the wake of this election cycle, people should remember that:

  • It was Democrats that voted against GLBT rights in 4 states
  • It was Democrats that voted against two very strong and capable women
  • It was Democrats that attacked two very strong women with vicious sexism
  • It was Democrats that found the attacks on freedom of speech acceptable (truth squads)
  • It was Democrats that applauded unfair and unethical election practices (primaries)
  • It was Democrats that abandoned campaign finance reform
  • It was Democrats that conducted a questionable war on the sanctity of the vote (acorn, ohio)

And also that

  • It was evangelicals that failed to come out for the Republican Party
  • It was the evangelicals that turned out in higher numbers for the Democrats

No matter what the rhetoric, no matter what the politicians say, the Democratic Party has abandoned two of its’ key constituencies…  women and gays.  I shudder to thing what will happen when little bites begin to be taken out of Roe v Wade.  I no longer have any confidence that the Democratic Party will protect women’s right to choose.

It is time for the Republican party to abandon the Neo-Conservatives.  It is time for the Republicans to recapture the center and to become the party of Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Barry Goldwater once again.

It is time to remake the face of the Republican Party as the party of small government, both in business and in our daily lives.

It is time for the Republican Party to become the party of equal rights and freedoms for all.

It is time for the Republican Party to become the party that it once was.  The party that fought to give African Americans the right to vote.  The party that fought to give women the right to vote.  The party that helped the first woman get elected to Congress.  The party that fought for the individual against the crushing weight of the society and the government.

It is time for the Republican Party to abandon the path set forth by John Sears and Karl Rove and get back to its’ roots.

I am calling on the Republican Party to abandon the “Religious Right” that abandoned you.

I am calling on the Republican Party to abandon its attack on a woman’s right to choose.

I am calling on the Republican Party to abandon the attacks on the division between church and state.

I am calling on the Republican Party to abandon the injection of religion into social policy

I am calling on the Republican Party to allow people of any race, creed, color or sexual preference to associate in any way they deem appropriate…  including marriage.

I am calling on the Republican Party to defend my rights as a citizen to live my life without interference from the government as long as my actions are not harming others.

I am calling on the Republican Party to stop being a RINO and start being Republican once again.

Hey, Obama… the Keating 5; I Don’t Think That Means What You Think It Does?

Apparently Obama is a bit frightened of the coming hardball game that McCain and his crew are gearing up for.  So much so that Obama is telegraphing a move he could make as a warning to McCain…

The Keating 5.

From the AP

Barack Obama’s allies warn that John McCain’s attacks on the Democrat’a character will lead to the political equivalent of mutual assured destruction: fire your big weapon at your own peril.

Several Obama surrogates said his supporters may start reminding voters of McCain’s ties to Charles Keating, a convicted savings and loan owner whose actions two decades ago triggered a Senate ethics investigation that involved McCain as one of the “Keating Five.”

Well, it seems that Obama fulfilled the promise and quietly released a youtube video on the subject called Keating Economics.

For those of you that are not familiar, the Keating 5 is a term that refers to a group of 5 Senators that were accused of corrupt dealings with a banker named Keating during the “Savings and Loan Crisis” of the 80′s.

The group of Senators was comprised of 4 Democrats and 1 Republican…  John McCain.

Only problem is that John McCain (as well as John Glenn) was completely exonerated of any wrong doing what-so-ever by the Special Prosecutor Robert Bennet and recommended removing John McCain from any further investigation.

The problem was that removing John McCain would remove the only Republican from the corruption case and politically the Democrats in power could not afford to have 3 of their Senators sit up there alone, going down in flames for shady dealings.

Against the wishes of the Special Prosecutor, the Democratic Chair of the Ethics Committee kept McCain’s name on the list and gave him what essentially amounted to a scowl and a wagging finger.  The committee decided that McCain’s actions “were not improper nor attended with gross negligence,” about which McCain said…  “I see it as a full exoneration”

.

Yeah, so let’s tell that story Barry…  about how John McCain is a good and honorable man, yet there were 3 DEMOCRATIC Senators at the center of the “Savings and Loan Crisis.”

Yeah, Barry, lets talk about how wonderfully the Democrats have handled the banking institutions…  there couldn’t possibly be a parallel to today’s problems could there?

I dare you to keep pushing this meme…

Keep talking about the corrupt Democrats and the uncorruptable John McCain.  Yeah, do that…  Keep talking…

I double dog dare you.

Even Saturday Night Live knows the Democrats are the root of the cause…

Oh, and lest I forget about the Keating 3

Three of… the Keating Five have endorsed Obama: Former senators Dennis DeConcini. John Glenn, and Donald W. Riegle. All three are Democrats… and DeConcini and Riegle were among the more deeply implicated officials.

Gallup Poll – Obama/Biden Convention Bounce Slipping – 48/42

It seems the bounce that the Democrats were hoping for at the end of the Convention in Denver failed to meet expectations and is now slipping away entirely.

The Democrats were hoping for a 15pt bounce out of the announcement of Biden as the VP pick, as well as the “Unity Week” in Denver.  The bounce peaked out at 8 pts mid-Convention week but has now slipped to a 6pt lead.

4 things have contributed to this…

1.  The unexciting choice of Biden as VP

2.  The passing over of Clinton as VP and the continuing disunity in the party

3.  The Russia/Georgia conflict

4.  The naming of Sarah Palin as McCain’s VP which both reaches out to disaffected Clinton supporters and to the Conservative base.

And the Democrats should be worried.  The Republicans are heading into their Convention week, and for the next week…  it’s gonna be all about McCain/Palin.

McCain Office Receive Threatening Letters Contaning “White Powder”

From CBS

Threatening letters containing an unidentified white powder have been received at John McCain’s campaign offices in Denver, Colorado, and Manchester, New Hampshire, CBS News has learned.

McCain’s campaign office in Denver received a letter containing a threat and “an amount of white powder in it,” a McCain campaign spokesman told CBS News’ Michelle Levi.

Another McCain spokesperson later said that McCain’s New Hampshire office “received a similar letter.”

WOW…  if this is accurate, that is pretty scary.  The threats of violence must be removed from this political cycle.  From the trashing of the Obama offices, to the threat against Obama himself, and the threats towards Hillary and her supporters, to Bill Gwatney and now John McCain’s offices…  this is crazy!

WOW, this should send up some alarm bells!

Ohio: Obama Drops 8pts And Is Now Tied With McCain

In the lastest PPP poll, it shows that Obama has rapidly dropped 8pts in Ohio and is now tied with McCain.

The reason?  Clintonistas…

One factor causing Obama problems is that he’s not doing as good a job as McCain of getting folks in his party to vote for him. While McCain leads 89-7 among Republicans, Obama’s lead is a narrower 75-17 among Democrats. Obama has the 45-28 edge with independent voters.

The Democrats neglecting to choose Obama are disproportionately white, female, and middle aged, an indication that it could be former supporters of Hillary Clinton who are holding out.

And Ohio is one of the most important swing states there is…  this is really not good news for the Dems…

I hate to say “We told you so,” but…  yeah, we told you so.
