Speaking as an individual and not for her organization, Shelley Mandell, who is the President of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women and a self-described lifelong Democrat, has endorsed Sarah Palin.
At a rally in California today, in front of a crowd of 20,000, Shelly Mandell introduced Palin and she had a lot of VERY good things to say about her.

“I know Sarah Palin cares about women’s rights,” Mandell said. “As vice president, she will fight for you. She cares about our children and she cares about women’s lives.”
And then, as she handed over the microphone to Sarah Palin, Mandell said;
“this is what a feminist looks like“
Palin took the stage, thanked Mandell and quoted her Starbucks cup from earlier in the day. Apparently it had a saying from Madeline Albright on the side. And so Palin started off with this…
“‘There’s a place hell reserved for women who don’t support other women,’ ” Palin quoted. “Let’s see how that comment is turned into whatever it’s turned into in tomorrow’s papers.”
How amazingly brave and wonderful is that!
Bravo Ms. Mandell, Bravo Ms. Palin.
NOW needs to be turned on it’s ear!

UPDATE: I emailed Ms. Mandell to thank her for her bravery, let her know that a whole lot of Hillary supporters applauded her and that we would be singing her praises for a long time.

UPDATE: NOW California has released a statement re-affirming NOW’s endorsement of Obama (the first time that NOW has endorsed a Presidential candidate without a woman on the ticket iirc btw) and repudiating the endorsement of Palin by Shelly Mandell.
And so the feminist wars begin…

Sarah Palin is a dangerous and ill informed person. She will repeat any nonsense that the Repubs put in her head (i.e “Obama is palling around with terrorists” which is a lie). She is the only one of the candidates for Pres/VP who is under ethics investigation, yet continues to spew incoherent and bizarre statements (”There is a special place in hell….”). Most women, fortunately, can see through this and will not vote for her.
I was at this rally too. Sarah wowed the crowd. They LOVED her, no doubt about it. I was shocked that Shelley Mandell was there to introduce her (I thought Meg Whitman was going to do it!) Bravo to Ms. Mandell, she’s very brave for going against The One!

It is important to read and understand messages. Clearly you do not understand that Shelly Mandell spoke as an individual. No one has said that NOW endorses Palin. That would be ridiculous.

I thought for day’s what would be the correct action against The National Organization of Women. I mean come on they lost focus, they endorsed a man for president who does not give his Senate staff equal pay for equal work. In the primary season they did not seem to be to bent out of shape over all the rampant sexism the media directed at the female candidate, and the candidate they endorsed dished out the sexist banter also. I finally think I know what we need to do.
Write this to them Dear National Organization of Women you are old out of touch, and worn torn like this old bra, out shape thread bare, and no longer serve a purpose. Since this is what you seem to represent to America “We Want You To Have This Bra”, as a symbol of your uselessness, burn it like the old days because you seem to not have the fight in you. You have endorsed a candidate who does not give equal pay for equal work ( Fact ), and you never launched a national campaign against this candidate when he served up volley after volley of misogyny (Fact). As a matter of fact you dropped the ball of a national campaign against the media for the same. Now (no pun intended) with the celebration in July of Seneca Falls your little shindig in Washington only gave an honorable mention of the fact, it should had been the driving force (160 years of the women’s rights movement). You got to big for your fancy putting on airs pant suit. I think it is time for the real Suffragettes & Men of Honor to take over…

Ms.Matthews, I like your idea! I was trying to remember exactly when I let my membership in NOW lapse, but I think it was about the same time they started being a kinder, gentler NOW and getting away from being a loud, even sometimes obnoxious, voice for women. Since I’m still getting membership renewal notices from them, I’ll stuff that old bra in and send it back explaining why I won’t be renewing. I always despaired that they seemed to me disrespectful of and patronizing toward working class women, so maybe it’s not surprising they would like Obama.

Thank you for supporting Governor Palin, Ms. Mandell! I have come to detest organizations like NOW, which should be renamed THEN. If feminism is supposed to mean prochoice and nothing else, count me out.
I’m very excited that Senator McCain picked Governor Palin as his running mate. But then, Senator McCain demonstrates much superior judgment than his opponent in many areas, beginning with the people each one choses to associate with. I am glad to be voting for McCain/Palin, and thank you for also supporting the ticket, despite the outcry from your erstwhile colleagues.
Personally, it would be great if she knew how to spell.

It’s funny, I followed this link and read the article. Of course I like to read the comments after the article best. Apparantly there was too much support for Palin and Mandell posted and they closed the comment section after only a few posts. It’s great.
