I saw this in the Washington Post today, only to be repeated by Debbie Wasserman-Shultz (who I do admire greatly) on Larry King Live and was surprised.
After the legislature passed a spending bill in April, Palin went through the measure reducing and eliminating funds for programs she opposed. Inking her initials on the legislation — “SP” — Palin reduced funding for Covenant House Alaska by more than 20 percent, cutting funds from $5 million to $3.9 million. Covenant House is a mix of programs and shelters for troubled youths, including Passage House, which is a transitional home for teenage mothers.
This did not jive with what I had read about Palin earlier in the day. She is very supportive of social services to women so that they can work and finish school. She is a member of Feminists For Life that advocates for that very thing.
This also had the smell of a hit piece to it… a bit convenient, especially in light of her daughters situation.
And so I decided to look it up… and sure enough, Palin did reduce the amount allocated to the Covenant House from the proposed $5M to $3.9M…
BUT I also found out that she reallocated those funds to various food banks as well as other social services.all over the state that were getting nothing in the bill sent to Palin.
Then a friend, Boudicca, found this little tidbit…. turns out that the Covenant House was given $1.2M the year before… (here)
.
If “slashing” indicates giving a 300% increase in funding… sign me up! “Slash” my paycheck! Please!!!
.
.
Please, while accusations are flying around… especially those about Palin for right now… look into them, vett them, as you should vett her.
The more I look at her, the more normal she gets.
Don’t buy into the spin and the soundbites. Look it up for yourself.
