Hurricane Gustav is set to strike New Orleans the morning of opening day at the RNC Convention in the Twin Cities.
The AP shows the different responses…
McCain’s reaction…
John McCain tore up the script for his Republican National Convention on Sunday, ordering the cancellation of all but essential opening-day activities as Hurricane Gustav churned toward New Orleans.
“This is a time when we have to do away with our party politics and we have to act as Americans,” he said as fellow Republicans converged on their convention city to nominate him for the White House….
The hasty reordering of an event months in the planning was unprecedented, affecting not only the program on the podium but the accompanying fundraising, partying and other political activity that unfolds around the edges of a national political convention….
In an interview with NBC, he said it was possible he would make his acceptance speech not from the convention podium but via satellite from the Gulf Coast region.
OR
Obama’s Response….
“I think we can activate an e-mail list of a couple of million people who want to give back,” he said.
Basically it breaks down like this…
On one hand we have a guy that is willing to sacrifice what is traditionally the most important moment of any political campaign to help his fellow Americans by cutting the event short, going to the region, gathering fundraisers, and helping to oversee operations….
On the other hand we have a guy that is going to send out an email blast….
Remember that 3AM phone call… yeah, well, Failure #2 Barry. Failure #2.
Oh, and the point… It is not about you. It is about us.
The sooner you learn that, the better off you will be.
Oh, and to review failure #1… CLICK HERE
Seriously… what was the DNC thinkin with this guy?
Just Say No Deal.

Quick, someone send Barky a cake and a guitar!
hey, Barky got people! And a make believe AF one! and a make believe seal…and a temple too!
Barack has a very limited sense of relative importance of events, etc. in the world. Remember the “Iran is a small country” remark and now the possibility of another Katrina-type event gets practically no notice at all from Obama. This guy seems to have very little imagination or empathy. Only when the rest of the world gets “fired up” on a problem will Obama recognize the significance of an issue–or at least the signicance of the quantity of votes related to an issue.
Don’t wear yourself out sending out that email Sen. Obama.
Whatta guy.
The pathetic thing is, he doesn’t even realize he should be doing something besides sending out emails. Not only are the much-vaunted leadership skills not there, but the ability to recognize a crisis that demands leadership isn’t there.
Hasn’t someone in his campaign told him to get off his butt and get down to the coast? Or don’t they dare tell the little emperor something he doesn’t want to hear?
Good post!
Has anyone you known gotten one of those e-mails? My husband is an Obama supporter (poor sick dear) and he said he hasn’t gotten one. It would be interesting to find out if he doesn’t follow through on his promise. Not that I would be surprised if he blew it…he’ll just blame one of his staff members.
i am on his email list too and never once have i received a fundraising email that gave money to anyone but Obama himself…
so i guess the answer would be nope, i dont.
So, let me get this straight.
1. McCain’s response is nothing but cancelling the first day of the RNC. Not mobilizing aid to the region. Not suggesting some sort of fundraiser, etc., etc. All he does is say, “Day 1′s cancelled, and I might actually have to accept the nomination via satellite instead of in person.”
2. Obama says, “we CAN activate” a list of millions, which is a suggestion of direct action that he COULD do. Nevermind that the storm has not even yet passed, nor has the damage/toll yet been assessed. Any other response by Obama would have been attacked by you people as Obama rushing into a situation where he didn’t belong, or being self-aggrandizing. Funny that the one candidate who immediately suggested that he COULD take action if needed is the one you criticize. Yet, the other candidate, who has to cancel day one of his big expensive party, is the one you praise.
No wonder many are convinced you’re nothing more than a shill for the GOP.
sorry moonshine… the first day of the GOP convention was a giant fundraiser. And McCain gathered fundraisers the day before Gustav hit.
Are you a DNC shill…because you certainly didnt read what was written?
Gustav???
I understand Hurricane Hillary is scheduled to hit the US around Nov. 4th. Supposed to begin as a Category 1 and grow to a Category 5.
MG
Hey Moonshine-
McCain did more than call off the first day of the convention…he was in Ohio getting needed supplies together for the hurricane victims. Take another sip of your Kool-Aid.
You’re kinda missing the point.
The only reason McCain and the Repubs are pretending to care is because they were perceived as not giving a damn the last time around.
The McCain family (read: Cindy) have tons of money to give away. Provided Cindy gets a receipt and can write it off on her taxes.
Why does it surprise anyone that Obama would use e-mail rather than anything real to help? He is one of those responsible for the fact that the work is not finished in the first place. He voted against two bills supported by Oklahoma’s Tom Coburn that would have in effect cut pork barrel projects and directed funds saved to rebuilding Louisiana.
And I am very curious what the result of his email blast will be. Don’t knock yourself out there Barry!
What an amazing contrast between the Pres. and vice Pres. front runners. If you have just small part of your pea brain to analize their stands and moves, McCain is just so on top of everything like the ACE PILOT and HE is hovering so high up with a grin on his face and unfortunately we don’t even know it until it is tooooollllaaatteee!!!! He is a true HERO and he knows it!!!
madmong, normally I don’t engage in Ad hominine tactics in debate, but your statement is beyond supercilious, beyond condescension, beyond duplicitous, beyond boorish, beyond contemptuous. So far beyond civility, I can only conclude that you’re an ignorant, f*cking a$$hole. You be sure to have a nice day.
The McCains reportedly gave 25,000 for Gustav relief.
Damned if the do and damned if they don’t?
At least they gave. Did Obama?
Not that I have heard.
His response to Gustav was weak.
Obama is weak.
McCain is a class act, no doubt about it. Obama got caught snoozing (again) on this one.
moonshine,
McCain got all of his fundraisers to raise money for the victims, don’t forget he’s keeping his word on public finance so he was giving up all last minute donations. He also organized an on-line donation rally on his website! He went to the region and volunteered as well as stayed in communications with all Governors!
McCain/Palin 08!! “Country First”
I’m an Independent who usually swings Democratic, but not this year. Not with an Independent candidate like McCain. Plus, he and Sarah Palin are true reformers. They don’t just talk about a lot of stuff like Obama! They will fix this mess we are in, and McCain has ALWAYS put “Country First”! Did anyone watch any of tonights convention speeches? The highlights were Fred Thompson and Joe Lieberman. Thompson reminded people of the character McCain has. I loved it when he said “that’s character you can believe in”! Thompson told McCain’s awesome biography and he DEFENDED Sarah Palin and the disgusting media treatment. Thompson also said the Democrats elected a historical candidate this year, historical in that he’s the most liberal and inexperienced person to ever run! lol Joe Lieberman, being a Democrat, made the case for crossing Party lines in this election and how it’s so important this year! He made it clear that John McCain is his own man, not a go along Republican! Lieberman said some of his Democratic friends were trying so hard to paint him as something else because they know they can’t tell you the truth! I already knew this by his record and bipartisanship. Let’s not forget John Kerry asked McCain to run with him in 2004,Joe Biden said he would be HONORED to run WITH or against John McCain,Howard Dean said he was modeling his campaign after McCain the last time he ran, this year Bill and Hillary said Obama’s not ready on day one but McCain is,not to mention Bill Clinton’s comments one day before his convention speech about candidate “x” and “y”(Candidate x you agree with on ALL the issues but you don’t think he can deliver on any.Candidate y you agree with on half the issues but you know he will deliver on the half! Joe Lieberman echoed the message about Obama being not ready and McCain being the true “change” candidate tonight at the convention! Lieberman said I want to talk to my friends watching at home for a minute, I don’t care if your Independents,”Reagan Democrats”,”Clinton Democrats”,or just regular old Democrats! He then asked for your votes. Watch it on youtube sometime, it was pretty good! I’m sure it will be on there later! McCain/Palin 08!! “Country First”
You’re completely wrong for THIS reason. McCain made such a big deal because your last Republican made a disaster out of a similar event. Bush failed miserably, and the only reason McCain made such a big deal, when media reports showed Gustav wasn’t nearly as large as Katrina, was to make up for the failures of Bush, someone he finds himself being repeatedly compared to. You are completely wrong.
lifeispolitics, I just love how you all are psychics. When McCain opposed Reagan, it was for political gain? When McCain opposed Rumsfeld, it was for political gain? When McCain stayed in Hanoi as a matter of honor, it was for political gain? When McCain was the ONLY Senator to show up to tesify against Keating at a civil trial, it was for political gain (keeping in mind that the Democrat prosecutor has repeatedly said that the only reason McCain was included in that investigation was because the Democrats needed a Republican scapegoat)? When McCain all but committed political hari-kari to pass election reform with Feingold and put together the Gang of 14, that was for political gain? Has he made mistakes? Of course. Unlike the The One, he’s human. But I’ll tell you one thing I know absolutely about McCain. He never, ever sells his honor or duty for gain and unlike The One, he’s got a lifetime on public record to prove it.
I understand you people are spreading the word that God is a Democrat because he wanted to destroy the Gulf Coast to ruin McCain’s convention. I’d suggest you folks stop believing your own press. If McCain says he’s concerned and cares, I can’t find one single reason to believe he’s lying.
Interesting. Sen. McCain now wants to make the tax cuts permanent after correctly opposing them because the President had no plans to cut spending. Sen. McCain visits the evangelical right-wing and kisses their rings after telling them where to get off in 2000. Flip-flopper? No, not honest John., “he never, ever sells his honor or duty for gain” Please, people McCain is just like Sen. Clinton who is just like sen. Obama. Ambitious, ruthless and ego-drive. Why else would they subject themselves and their families to such abuse by the left-wing and the right-wing media, the fickle public and the attack-dog pundits.
I know no one will notice this since this entry is already so low on your blog, but I notice that you haven’t noticed yet that McCain hasn’t said word 1 about Hurricane Ike just about to destroy Texas, and there’s nothing about it on his website. Yet Obama has a call on the front page of his website for all to donate immediately to the Red Cross and Save the Children.
What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, THC. If you’re going to call out Obama like you did here, start dishing it out on the other side as well.
Hi Moonshine,
As a matter of fact, John McCain has made comments about Ike, calling for help.
And I am not at all shocked that Obama has gone WAY hardcore on the Ike issue because he was ROUNDLY criticized on his response to Gustav. I mean, the guy made his front page an “Ike” page…. overcompensation maybe?
just a thought.
