Every PUMA remebers when Obama ran scared when Hillary was challenging him to debates. She even laid it down… “any time, any where” style, but he was too much of a wimp for Little Lady Hillary.
And now, it seems he is too much of a wimp for Old Man McCain.
The AP reports that:
Democratic candidate Barack Obama on Saturday backed away from rival John McCain’s challenge for a series of joint appearances, agreeing only to the standard three debates in the fall.
In May, when a McCain adviser proposed a series of pre-convention appearances at town hall meetings, Obama said, “I think that’s a great idea.” In summer stumping on the campaign trail, McCain has often noted that Obama had not followed through and joined him in any events.
Obama’s reversal on town hall debates is part of a play-it-safe strategy he’s adopted since claiming the nomination and grabbing a lead in national polls. Advisers to the Illinois senator, speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss strategy, say Obama is reluctant to take chances or give McCain a high-profile stage now that Obama’s the front-runner.
And, of course, the McCain campaign comes back with a zinger here
“John McCain looks forward to debating Barack Obama as often as possible, but it’s disappointing that Senator Obama has refused his offer to do joint town hall meetings. We understand it might be beneath a worldwide celebrity of Barack Obama’s magnitude to appear at town hall meetings alongside John McCain and directly answer questions from the American people, but we hope he’ll reconsider. The American people expect and deserve no less. Unfortunately, it appears that Barack Obama’s tough-guy talk on ‘duels’ this week was just more empty words. Americans are quickly coming to the conclusion that it’s better to look at what Barack Obama actually does and not listen to what he says.”
They are just pounding that imagery of Obama as a trite celebrity…. and it’s just getting funnier.
Please, Super Delegates… JUST SAY NO DEAL!!!!

How many of us are “surprised” by all of this. Playing it safe guarantees a loss.
He had really never regained any footing after the terrible debate in PA. Everything since then had been more smoke and mirrors and the electorate is getting tired of it.
One of the things that’s becoming clear about Obama’s character is that he’s not a risk-taker. He won’t put himself into a situation that’s not rehearsed or at least semi-scripted. That’s not terribly “audacious” or “hopeful,” now, is it? It shows he’s unlikely to think out of the box or bring innovative solutions to some of the worst problems–if not the worst problems–this nation’s ever faced. It’s no wonder an ex-fighter pilot, who has to recognize a danger and act immediately, unequivocally and creatively, is beginning to appeal to more and more voters and The One is starting to drop like the loser in an aerial dogfight.
I’m not surprised at all that he doesn’t want to do Town Hall’s. He’s terrible at things like that.
And his race baiting is starting to backfire on him: Only 22% Say McCain Ad Racist, But Over Half (53%) See Obama Dollar-bill Comment That Way
“Americans are quickly coming to the conclusion that it’s better to look at what Barack Obama actually does and not listen to what he says.”
It is also illuminating to pay attention to where and from whom Obama is fund raising for insight to his flip flops on policy. He also appears to base his policies on polling not principle.
PUMA’s evidently have made their voices heard:
Obama says give FL and Mich delegates full vote
[...] came the remarks from the McCain campaign in response to Obama backing out of the townhalls… “John McCain looks forward to debating Barack Obama as often as possible, but it’s [...]
Yep, just like he refused the 10 townhalls McCain proposed earlier.
Yet he likes to keep throwing the “I’ll be happy to have a debate with McCain on this any time, anywhere.” around
Or..
“Instead of these ads McCain has out there, we should be debating the issues Americans care about…
Yeah…when will that be, Baaarraaacckk, you chicken?
After you can’t screw up enough to lose the Dem Nomination, I’m sure.
It is a common tactic for a politician, when he or she has come to the realization that their opponent is ahead, to demand more debates. This opens a possible door for an aggressive and offensive move that might force the leading pol into a stumble or mistake. It is a hail Mary of sorts when one is running out of campaign time, but is fairly standard.
It should surprise no one that McCain’s campaign takes such umbrage that Obama will not meet him wherever and whenever McCain wants. Likewise, it should not surprise anyone that the leader here, granted marginally so, is declining that request. I find the 3 agreed to debates a little light but I felt the 17 or so that went on in the Democratic primary more than enough.
Just as we saw with Clinton’s campaign, McCain’s team is finding itself outmaneuvered by the candidate both have attempted to label as a neophyte lacking what it takes to lead. Like the Clinton campaign, McCain is finding himself in a reactive posture and allowing Obama to set the discourse while he tries various machinations meant to tear away at Obama’s appeal or charisma. Towards the end of Clinton’s campaign we saw such tactics begin to take an effect and McCain has learned from her loss.
However, I tend to believe Obama has learned some things as well. Limiting the debates is a savvy political move. For some they will emphasize the ‘political’ part of that description. Nevertheless, this is politics and both candidates involved are politicians and so we are left to watch McCain’s lumbering attacks pitted against Obama’s fast footwork.
A lesson McCain should have learned is to talk more about why he is the right choice instead of obsessing about Obama being the wrong one. That dog just won’t hunt for long.
McCain still has a lot of amunition to use to expose who Barry really is. I think that dog has a lot of hunt left in him. Especially with BO on “vacation,” McCain has an opening to show people more about his opponent.
With the Dem convention coming soon, Barry will be announcing his running mate. Once that happens, the buzz will be about his choice for at least a few days. McCain needs to hit BO now while he can.
“That dog won’t hunt” ? Where ‘d you learn that ? A video game or grandpa? Bottom line is the more people learn about the Obumessiah, the less they like him. He’ll never win without massive voter fraud.
Obama is a fake from the word go! He tell what ever group he’s talking to what they want to hear and flip flopping all over that there frying pan, its getting to hot for Obama! The American people are starting to understand that Obama is no more than the greatest lier ever in politics.
Considering that McCain ain’t much of a debater himself, that says a lot about Bawk Obama! I kinda understood his avoiding facing Hillary – she is formidable. But avoiding McCain – shows he can’t debate ANYONE!
Wanted to add that Obama & The Obots sure know how to practice ageism: “Mr. McGoo, old-fogey, McDim,” and other ageist insults have been hurled at McCain with regularity on message boards and through implication.
Interesting how accusations of “racism” have been used against opponents of Obama however, ageism is, I suppose, OK with them???
MG
MG,
Don’t forget about Stephanie Miller’s quip, “Grampy McSame.”
It’s not just the Obots… it’s the pundits too.
THC:
Yes, the pundits are just as culpable. Amazing what they allow themselves to get away with, no?
I wonder what demographic have they not insulted…..
Btw, *thank you* for your Blog
MG
Mr. McCain has got to where he is by debating and would tear Obama into little bits in a townhall meeting. Obama’s problem is he has no answers except for his lies. Obama is also a socialist.

What a Chicken sh*t. EXACTLY why I support Hillary.
McCain should suggest debating Hillary!!! THAT will get Obambi’s attention!
A scary, scary thought it is to do another debate (let alone mulitple) with anyone, after Obama trounced himself via Charlie Gibson And George Stefanopoulos/ABC, when he debated HRC. In science, it is called the Fight or Flight Response. Flight obviously occurred.

But Jackson! I thought Obama was above all that! Tell me it isn’t so…..
That big “O” he replaced the flag with? Stands for Orwell. Peace is war. Racism is tolerance. Lies are truth. Knowledge is shooting from the hip. Wrong is wright (pun intended).
I’m PDS McCain and the 527’s will start hitting with both barrels come September/October because Obama has handed over the arsenal. I don’t think “Obama Nation” hitting #1 is an accident.
The ObamaWTF blog has an article about how the paid Obama posters get the day’s “talking” points and then copy and paste from blog to blog. There’s also an interesting phenomena where the Obama posters don’t actually respond to debating points: they merely revert to name-calling. Guaran-damn-teed every single time.
They remind me of the FLDS ladies. Blank-stared cultists. Obama is the Joseph Smith of the Democrat party—scary as hell.
We know nothing about Obama cause he does not want the American people to know who he is and what he stands for. Now there has to be a reason that he is trying to keep everything secret. When a person starts covering up, then beware!
Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog.
